Student Loan Advice for Advisors

CSLP Program Simplifies Student Loan Advising

Why “Just Pay It Off” Isn’t a Real Strategy

It might be tempting to treat student loans like credit card debt or a mortgage: calculate the interest, pay more each month, and clear it as quickly as possible. Realistically, for many, this is not possible. It’s difficult for graduate students and those in healthcare such as physicians and dentistry. Education is expensive.

But for financial advisors working with clients who carry student loan debt, it’s important to have the right mindset and information. For example:

Unlike other types of consumer debt, student loan repayment plans and interest are governed by:

  • Federal regulations
  • Income-driven repayment (IDR) plans
  • Forgiveness eligibility
  • State residency
  • Family size and tax filing status
  • The borrower’s and their spouse’s income

One-size-fits-all debt advice doesn’t work here. Clients need accurate, evolving guidance—and that’s where many financial advisors are unprepared.

The Risks of Oversimplifying Student Loan Repayment

Advisors who don’t fully understand how student loan repayment works may accidentally give incorrect or inappropriate advice. Avoid errors that can backfire and hurt your client: Common mistakes include:

  • Recommending refinancing without realizing the impact to their existing program’s costs and interest or
  • That the client could qualifies for PSLF or
  • Advising clients to file taxes jointly when separate filing would lower payments or
  • Assuming all federal loans work the same way

These are just a few of the potentially dozens of mistakes that untrained advisors can make. Ultimately costing your clients tens of thousands of dollars—and your trust.

The Complexity of Repayment Strategy

Student loans require a strategic approach because the rules can change, and the right strategy is client-specific, and even time-sensitive. As a client’s financial situation can change such as with a job loss, reduction or substantial increase in income, even a physical relocation to a different state. These are just a few of the factor that affect repayment decisions, which warrant careful examination of the client’s financial situation:

  • The mix of loan types (Direct, FFEL, Perkins, private) all have different rules for interest and repayment
  • There are borrower advantages and associated rules when a client works in a nonprofit or public service job, including healthcare
  • Changes in income or family size affect repayment calculations for some incomes based on family size and their state of residence
  • If in a forgiveness program, the closer they forgiveness milestones, the greater potential for a closer look at goals and objectives.

Your advice needs to be flexible, compliant, and deeply informed.
