Borrower Resources

What you need to know

Our Purpose

In support of the mission of the organization and its certification and training programs, the CSLA Board of Standards is committed to informing the public, specifically student loan borrowers, of the importance of using qualified professionals to advise about their student loan repayment plans.

Unfortunately, there is are numerous organizations focused on student loan borrowers offering quick fix help usually in the form of expensive consolidations. Borrowers should be aware that the consolidation process is essentially free and can be completed online in a few minutes. But often, creating the smartest repayment strategy requires more thoughtfulness than a quick consolidation.

Seek qualified, knowledgeable resources

But more importantly, consumers repaying student loans should work only with financial professionals who can demonstrate advanced knowledge of the complexities of student loan repayment. Such professionals make recommendations only after a thorough analysis of a client’s complete financial picture.

In other words, consumers with student loans should seek out professionals who are providing services as part of their daily business activities such as financial planning, tax advice, investment services, etc.

Finding a qualified student loan advisor

Borrowers should seek out help from individuals and organizations who can demonstrate their specific knowledge of student loan programs AND personal financial counseling. One option is to look for advisors who have the CSLP designation (Certified Student Loan Professional).

A CSLP has demonstrated advanced knowledge about student loan advising along with experience in personal financial services. They have completed a rigorous curriculum of coursework and have years of experience as a financial professional. You can find those individuals on this site.
