LICENSING FOR CSLP®
To hold the CSLP®Designation , you must have an active financial license. This includes the CFP®, CPA®, CFA®, CLU,® ChFC®, AFC®, state insurance licenses, Registered Investment Advisor, or any active Series X.

If you do not have any of the above, you may request an exception through our support system.

There is no licensing requirement to complete the course. However, you may not represent yourself as a CSLP or be certified to deliver financial advice on student loans until you have completed the courses and all their requirements either by examination or a waiver approval.

QUICK FACTS

Average time to complete the coursework and pass all certification exams is 1-2 months.
THE EXAM REQUIREMENT
Passing the CSLP®:exams demonstrates knowledge competency in student loan analysis and advising.

The exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions and tests for knowledge in student loan rules and case analysis. You are presented with 4-5 cases with detailed loan data and demographics.

There is a 3.5 hour time limit. The exam uses a remote proctor available 7/24.

Each certificant is required to complete a renewal certification every year which consists of a brief open book exam.

In 2023, the 1st time pass rate for the CSLP Exam was 71%.
THE EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
To participate in the program we strongly recommend having 2 years experience working in the financial services sector or a Bachelors in business or finance.

THE ETHICS REQUIREMENT
The ethics requirement is the final step on your path to CSLP® certification. It indicates you've agreed to adhere to high ethical and professional standards for the practice of student loan advising, and to always put the best interest of your client's first.

Participants must submit an annual ethics statement at the time you renew your credential.

THE EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
The two-part education requirement includes both (1) completing coursework on financial planning through a CFP Board Registered Program, and (2) holding a bachelor's degree or higher (in any discipline) from an accredited college or university.

You must complete the coursework before you can take the CFP® exam. You have 5 years from the date you pass the CFP® exam to complete the bachelor's degree requirement.

Experience must be completed within 10 years before and 5 years after successful completion of the CFP® exam.
