The new CSLP® program is now available. The latest release will appear in all active student and CSLP learning portals. This release is the most extensive to date. A free preview version is also available here in the student learning portal.
The latest program includes over 150 lessons covering recent Department of Education updates to student loan programs, new case studies to assist the advisor in understanding how to get started, and profession-specific recommendations (MD, RN, DDS, JD, etc.)
Other changes include improvements to the student dashboard to identify program updates, course expiration, and other learning management system updates.
Below are a few course highlights. For a complete content list, visit the student loan portal. A free program preview is also available.
The SAVE repayment plan was created to streamline student loan repayment by offering a simplified and more affordable repayment structure. Our CSLP course presentation provides specific information covering the following items:
The CSLP Case Studies course (CSLP 400) contains a specific example of determining if SAVE is a good fit for a borrower. The study draws comparisons to other income-driven repayment plans.
Several new presentations are available on this topic, including an Advanced version and another on student loan forgiveness, specifically for IDR plans. Additional plans covered include Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR), Pay-as-you-earn (PAYE), and Income-Based Repayment (IBR). As is evidenced by the sheer number of plans, how does one know what’s best?
The CSLP Case studies help advisors to evaluate a client’s present situation and plans. Based on this information and the advisor’s knowledge about student loan repayment plans, the advisor can make recommendations.
Income-driven repayment plan payments are based on a percentage of discretionary income, family size, plan type, and the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). The presentation covers interest calculations, accrued interest, and eligibility criteria.
Heather Jarvis provides coverage of the essential information to collect in the initial client intake process. She discusses the interview process and how to collect student loan records and provides an advisor checklist of the items to cover.
Unfortunately, now that the Covid payment pause has ended, defaults will likely increase. CSLP Version 2 includes a new section on what triggers defaults with Federal loans and the associated consequences. Included is a discussion of private loans and the consequences of default, which include collections, lawsuits, and garnishments. This presentation provides critical information that financial advisors should know to share with student loan borrowers.
2023 concludes with substantial changes in student loan programs and repayment. The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program is no exception, with the recent Covid payment pause ending in September.
This new CSLP Program has a wholly updated learning module on PSLF, which covers everything from basic employment eligibility, the payments that are considered eligible for forgiveness, qualifying loans, tracking payment counts, and the Mohela (loan servicer) payment tracker.
Covid-19 forbearance existed between March 2020 and September 31, 2023. Loans in deferment are generally not considered as progress toward forgiveness.
General forbearance is for borrowers who can’t make payments due to financial hardship, illness, or other reasons.
Economic hardship forbearance is for borrowers who can’t make payments due to financial hardship, including Peace Corps volunteers.
In-school deferment is for borrowers enrolled at least half-time at an eligible school.
Student loan debt burden forbearance is for borrowers whose total student loan debt is 20 percent or more of their total monthly gross income.
The presentation includes additional deferment programs, including those for military service and post-active duty borrowers.
These loans are federal loans that graduate or professional students and parents of dependent undergraduate students can use to help pay for college or career school. In today’s economy, you’ll find many parents have their own student loans, along with their children.
Direct Parent Plus Loans have numerous credit requirements and other rules relating to deferment, repayment, and public service loan forgiveness. The CSLP program includes all of this information and can assist advisors in helping clients make the best choices.
Certain professionals give rise to unique opportunities for making recommendations for repayment. For example, the medical profession typically has very large student loan balances. MD and RN can avail themselves of programs to reduce the burden of student debt.
