Exams and Continuing Education

The CSLP certification examination is designed to assess your knowledge and ability to advise clients on student loan repayment planning.  A passing grade demonstrates to the public that you are competent to provide advice and planning services about student loan repayment within the context of a client’s personal financial goals.

The CSLP exam is a rigorous, comprehensive test of the participant’s knowledge of student loan programs and how to advise clients about the ongoing management of their loans.

The exam is based on all of the course content and includes case studies exemplifying common scenarios a financial advisor may encounter. The exam will present a series of questions based on case information that includes loan amounts, interest rates, loan types, family size, and location.

The CSLP™ Exam is a 2 hour online, remotely proctored multiple choice test. It is strongly recommended that you complete the entire CSLP course before registering for the exam. When you have completed the course material or at 6 months after your purchase, you will receive a notification to take register for the exam.  The exam fee is included in the initial course fee. If you need to extend course access beyond six months there is a $150.00 extension fee.

After registration, you will receive exam instructions within 1 business day.

Participants must pass the exam with a minimum score of 70% within the 2-hour time limit. Results will be provided via email within 2-3 business days. In the event a participant needs to retake the exam a $150 fee will apply. Retakes may occur after a 7-day waiting period.

Request Live Proctor

The Board recognizes that the preferred method of remote proctoring may not be allowable for all candidates. In the case where a student does not have access to the proper resources (supported computer, web camera, etc) or due to security settings on their computer established by employers, the Board has created an alternative means of proctoring the final exam.

CSLP candidates may opt to take the final exam from any test center that offers exam proctoring of their choice. Examples of proctoring centers include:

  • Public Libraries
  • College testing centers
  • Private testing centers
  • High School testing centers

Candidates that opt to have the exam proctored in a live setting may have to pay additional fees to the alternative proctoring service. In order to complete the final exam with a live proctor, CSLP candidates will need to complete CSLP exam alternate proctoring request form.

The following guidelines apply when using a live site proctor.

  1. Proctors must be impartial parties who have no established relationship with the exam participant. Established relationships that disqualify a person from serving as your proctor include friends, relatives, employers, work associates, supervisors, or fellow students.
  2. Valid proctors may include certified librarians, military education services officers, embassy representatives, and school officials (such as principals, deans, or guidance counselors).
  3. Proctors must have a valid email address and web access and must be willing to verify their identity with our proctor service and the CSLA Board of Standards.
  4. You are responsible for any additional fees charged by the live proctor and/or the facility.

To request approval for a live proctor session, contact the CSLP Administrator from within the CSLP Learning Management System.

Participants are expected to renew their certification annually by completing a shorter, non-proctored exam, and maintaining complainance with all terms and conditions. The exam will be based on existing and any new material released during the past year and is open-course. Notifications will be sent out several months in advance. Failure to renew will result in the expiration of your CSLP.  A reinstatement fee of $200 will be required. If you fail to reinstate beyond 30 days, a fee equal to 40% of the currently published course price will apply.

Continuing Education And Recertification Policy

Student loan rules are subject to change. For this reason, advisors must regularly update their knowledge of legislative and regulatory actions affecting student loan programs.  The Board believes continuing education plays an important role in ensuring that the public is getting accurate advice and support regarding their student loan repayment options. For this reason, the Board requires its designees to annually complete the renewal process and demonstrate current knowledge of student loan policies, procedures, and best practices by way of exam recertification.

Initial Reporting

The CSLP designation is conferred for renewable 12-month periods following extensive mandatory education and a comprehensive examination.  After the initial 12-month certification period, to renew the right to use the CSLP designation, all CSLP designees must complete continuing education and pass a recertification examination. These annual CE and recertification examination requirements must be fulfilled within 6 months of expiration of the 12-month CSLP designation period.  If an advisor does not complete the CE and recertification requirements within 6 months of expiration, the advisor must begin the certification process again.

Continuing Education And Recertification Policy

The CSLP designation denotes specialized knowledge of student loans within the context of financial and tax planning.  The scope of changes affecting student loans, tax, and financial planning will determine how much CE is required in a particular year. Designees will complete CE sufficient to maintain a robust knowledge base.  In order to ensure all CSLPs are competent, the Board requires CSLP designees to take an annual assessment.  To maintain eligibility as a CSLP, all CSLP designees will be required to:

  1. Complete all educational lessons that have been released or amended by the Board since the designee completed their course study.
  2. Take and pass an Annual Recertification Exam (minimum 70% correct answers).

About the CSLP Annual Recertification Exam

The CSLP Annual Recertification Exam will test designees’ knowledge of statutory and regulatory changes to student loan programs over the preceding 12 months. Additionally, the exam will retest core concepts of the CSLP course, to ensure that designees maintain the minimum subject matter knowledge necessary to assist student loan borrowers. The CSLP Annual Recertification Exam is open book and open note, consisting of 20 multiple choice questions. The minimum passing score is 70% correct answers. CSLPs are allowed two chances to pass the examination.
